The other day I wore my mother’s pearls to work. They are a very long strand of beautiful white pearls that hangs down past my chest. When I say I wore them to work, I mean First Grade. We had been reading a story where a detective was searching for lost pearls only to find out that she was really looking for false teeth. I don’t wear my pearls often because pearls are really not my style – but I do wear them once or twice a year to school. Why not? The kids loved them!
I wear my fancy party dresses to school, open a good bottle of wine for no apparent reason, eat pine nuts, order dessert, and use the good glasses. Life is too short not to.
We save so many things for later, putting off the ‘Good Stuff’ until we have company, go somewhere fancy, are on vacation or retire. I like to drink my wine out of our wedding crystal. I saved it for almost 20 years high up on a shelf and only took it out for the rare special occasion. We went years without using it. And then it dawned on me… what the hell am I saving it for? So, I started using it. And when I pour myself a glass I appreciate that wedding gift. I appreciate it every time and think how lucky I am to have such a beautiful glass – if you come over, I’ll let you drink out of one, too!
